Simple forms and raw materials give the museum’s wayfinding a strong, understated presence that complements the architecture and exhibitions.
We developed a unified signage system for the expanded museum, using a restrained palette of color and materials to provide clear navigation without competing with the building or its exhibitions.

The angular, folded form of the signs draws from the triangular shape of Virginia and the museum’s mission to explore the Civil War from multiple perspectives. We also used aluminum and steel to reference the site’s history as one of the nation’s largest foundries, connecting the signage to the story of the place.
