After a valuable design research phase, we decided to use the DNA sequence of the Great Horned Owl, a prominent species on campus, as the basis for a large graphic wall mural in the building’s new lobby. We incorporated Hollins’ primary brand colors as the four different bases in the DNA sequence, visually connecting this new facility to its larger community.
Practical Integration
The lobby signage was tasked with featuring all of the departments found in the building—Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, and Statistics—as well as offering recognition of the building namesake and supporters. Hollins’ bright secondary brand color palette came into play to help illustrate the diversity and energy of the program. Display panels were designed to be easily updated as Hollins’ science program evolves.
